Asa Briggs was a codebreaker at Bletchley Park from 1943 to 1945, serving as part of a team of men and women who worked to crack Axis codes and ciphers. Many books have been written about the Buckinghamshire mansion during the Second World War since secrecy rules were relaxed in the 1970s, but Briggs' memoirs are one of only a few first-hand accounts of life at the Park written by a professional historian. Briggs was a history student at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, when was was declared in 1939. After graduating in 1941, he taught history at Keighley Grammar School and served in the Royal Corps of Signals before joining the Intelligence Corps in 1942.
