RDT 3.0 introduces a new assumption that the underlying channel can lose packets, including data packets and ACKs. To address this, the sender implements a countdown timer and will retransmit the packet if no ACK is received before the timer expires. The receiver must still include the sequence number of the packet being ACKed to address potential duplicate or out-of-order packets. This approach allows for reasonable loss of packets as long as ACKs are received within the timeout period.
