A fictional account of the career of José Pascal Domingo de Ribas y Boyons (1749-1800)--known in Russia as Osip (iosif) Mikhaĭlovich Deribas--a Russian admiral of Spanish-Irish origin, son of the Spanish consul in Naples who joined the Russian Army as "member of the Spanish nobility" in 1772 and took part in the Russo-Turkish Wars of 1768-1774 and 1787-1792. In 1791 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, becoming full Admiral in 1796.
