Thomas Beard was born in Charleston, South Carolina, 24 Feb 1772, the son of Joshua and Agnes Beard. He was the only son to live to adulthood. He married Elizabeth ca 1795 and they had twelve children. He was a baker by trade. The family were members of the Washington Street Methodist Church in Columbia, South Carolina.
