What is Gotong Royong in Lombok about?

The article examines the revival of gotong royong, a principle of mutual aid, in Lombok, Indonesia, following the 2018 earthquakes. Local leadership and NGOs successfully mobilized community resources for reconstruction, fostering solidarity among survivors and enhancing social bonds across different religious groups. This contrasts with previous disaster responses, such as in Aceh after the 2004 tsunami, where external aid disrupted local mutual support systems.
