This document provides instructions for making an electromagnet with increasing levels of complexity. A simple electromagnet can be made with a battery, copper wire, and an iron nail. Wrapping the wire around the nail and connecting it to the battery causes the nail to become magnetized when electricity flows. Adding a switch allows turning the magnet on and off. For a more powerful magnet, use a battery pack instead of a single battery, a longer metal rod, and more wire coils around the rod.
