The maxillary air sinus, also known as the antrum of Highmore, is the largest paranasal sinus. It is pyramidal in shape with its base forming the lateral nasal wall. The maxillary sinus develops from a groove on the medial maxilla in the fourth month of gestation and reaches its maximum size by age 18. It opens into the middle meatus of the nasal cavity and can be impacted by nearby dental infections or trauma.
