The following investigations were initiated by forest decline research with old growth spruce Picea abies [L.J Karst.) on a northern German forest site (forestry district Farchau/Ratzeburg). They proved that besides polluiion there was also a strong significance of water and element supply, especially in spring and early summer, to wood formation. Therefore spruce seedlings were cultivated since 1990 under soil culture condition in two different soil Substrates of this forest site (OH-layer and B-layer) in order to study the influence of a drought period (soil water content: 20%) from May 30 to July 26, 1991 on wood formation of the plants on a cellular level in relation to the soil Substrates. During the total experimental period the water and element uptake and the biomass production of the plants in that model System were quantified. Changes of the shoot diameter of the plants were registered every hour with high sensitivity strain gauges with an accuracy of ± l , by spot measurements.
