End-stage renal disease develops through progressive stages of kidney damage and loss of nephrons over time. Repeated infections and inflammation can cause acute damage to the kidneys. Remaining nephrons undergo changes like hypertrophy to try and compensate for nephron loss, but this leads to decreased renal reserve.
