Flatworms are a phylum of soft-bodied invertebrates that live in both marine and freshwater habitats. They range greatly in size from nearly microscopic to over 20 meters long. There are over 20,000 known flatworm species that can be free-living or parasitic. Flatworms have bilateral symmetry, a simple nervous system, and lack organs and a body cavity since they are acoelomates with a thin body flattened between dorsal and ventral surfaces.
