What is A cup of news : the life of Thomas Nashe about?

A Cup of News is the first full-length biography of the Elizabethan pamphleteer, Thomas Nashe, author of Pierce Penilesse and The Unfortunate Traveller. The book takes its title from Nashe's own promise to 'carowse' to his readers a 'cuppe of newes'.Topical, aggressive, eccentric, Nashe's pamphlets were a kind of Private Eye of the 1590s. He was the friend of Marlowe, Lyly and Robert Greene; he was portrayed on stage by Shakespeare; he was the co-author of Ben Jonson's first play. He sheds a casual, intimate light on such colleagues, as on his many enemies. Charles Nicholl traces in detail the brief career of this 'university wit', and evokes the world of Elizabethan Grub Street: the literary in-fighting and piracy, the struggle with poverty and censorship. We also get the darker side of Nashe, the entertainer shadowed by obsessive fears and religious tensions.
