Tilak wrote his massive work Gita-Rahasya while imprisoned in Burma, exploring the philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita. He was seeking to address three issues: 1) the perceived gulf between eternal knowledge and worldly life according to Samkhya philosophy, 2) his impression of the Gita as universally containing Hindu religious principles, and 3) interpretations of the Gita seeming doctrinal rather than independent.
