The play "Riders to the Sea" by J.M. Synge follows an old Irish woman named Maurya who has lost five of her six sons to the sea and fears that her last son Bartley and missing son Michael may meet the same fate, despite her warnings, as the family struggles with poverty on their island home. Though Maurya refuses to bless Bartley as he leaves, he is later killed when his horse throws him into the raging sea, leaving Maurya realizing the sea can do no more harm with all her men now gone.
