Every month, the Filipino Nurses Association (FNA, pseudonym) holds their general meeting in an auditorium of a local hospital. Each meeting, or at least those I observed over a four-year period, started with a prayer. However, at one particular meeting a moment of silence for the victims of the massive earthquake that struck Bohol in Central Visayas in the Philippines preceded the prayer.Leading the meeting was Emmy, a foreign-born Filipina American nurse in her early fifties. "Let us take a moment of silence to remember those who have died or been injured in the Philippines and pray for their speedy recovery."After a moment of silence, Emmy thanked the members and asked them to bow their heads in prayer: "Dear Lord, we are daily reminded of why we are here and how much is asked of us. We understand our responsibility as Christians and the charity we must show to our brothers and sisters here in the United States and those in the Philippines."
