What is GEOMORPHOLOGY OF IMPACT CRATERS ON MERCURY 1 about?

Mercury has again become "the forgotten planet" of the solar system. Its Moonlike surface, imaged well over a decade ago by the Mariner 10 spacecraft (Murray et al. 1974), now appears prosaic compared to the tectonic terrains of Venus shown by the Venera orbiters, the diverse topography of Mars seen in the Viking pictures, or the bizarre landscapes of sorne of the outer satellites revealed by the Voyagers. However, Mercury is not simply another Moon. Its surface features fumish essential pieces to the interpretive puzzle posed by contrasts in the geomorphology of the inner planets (see, e.g., Strom 1984,p. l 7,54). This chapter seeks to identify possible influences on the impact-cratering process from the morphology of fresh-looking Mercurian craters 1 km to 1500 km across. Here, "crater" denotes young structures formed by primary impact, including all the two-ring and multiring landforms commonly called basins. Degraded craters (minus basins) and those formed by secondary impact raise problems other than those addressed here, and are not considered. Size-dependent differences in crater shape, when correlated with those elsewhere, both clearly establish the uniqueness of Mercury am
