What is Alexander the Great as Dhul-Qarnayn about?

The story of Dhul-Qarnayn in the Quran may be a reference to Alexander the Great. Western and traditional Muslim scholars generally identify Dhul-Qarnayn with Alexander the Great. However, some early Muslim scholars believed it referred to a pre-Islamic Persian or southern Arabian monarch. Legends of Alexander the Great were popular in the Middle East in the early Christian era and the story of Dhul-Qarnayn has similarities to these legends which involved Alexander building a wall in the Caucasus mountains
