In a series circuit, the total potential difference (EMF) across all components equals the sum of the individual EMFs of the power supply. A parallel circuit consists of multiple branches where the current splits, so each branch carries a smaller current than the overall supply but all branches have the same potential difference equal to the EMF of the power supply. Parallel circuits allow individual control of components and redundancy if one component fails.
