What is The Modern Prometheus about?
Abstract If it would be scientifically more appropriate to use humans to investigate human disease, is there any way this could be done in an ethical manner? In the nineteenth century Ernst Haeckel coined the term “stem cell” to describe a type of cell from which all others are derived during embryonic development. This chapter discusses the history of stem cells and how they can be used to clone animals and animal tissues, including human tissues. There has been exceptionally rapid progress in producing cloned versions of human tissues that do not require producing intact humans. These preparations are known as organoids. Organoids can be made that represent any human tissue, and can be used as experimental models, the results of which are human specific. Together with other current techniques, including sequencing, imaging, and artificial intelligence, biomedical research is now moving toward a completely human-based set of paradigms, making animal models obsolete.
