What is Adhesion of surgical dressings to wounds. A new invitro model about?

Clinical problems arise when surgical dressings adhere to the wounds they are intended to protect, In order to study the adhesion of dressings, it is highly desirable to have an tn vitro test method which is simple, rapid and informative. This paper reports experience with a wet-gelatine model which is covered by the dressing and allowed to dry out over a period of hours or days. The loss of moisture from the gelatine is monitored by weighing and adhesion is measured by means of a 180 ~ peel test. Different clinical situations can be simulated by allowing the gelatine to dry to different extents. Dressings investigated to date include absorbent materials (Melolin, Micropore and Lyofoam) and non-commercial semipermeable polyurethane films. Limited comparison with in vivo tests suggest that the model provides data relevant to real wounds.
