What is Policing The Miners' Strike about?
The 1984/85 miners' strike, the most important industrial conflict since 1926, proved to be a watershed in the politics and practice of policing in Britain. Accelerating the changes in policing apparent for some years, the strike saw the centralised organisation of police operations through the National Reporting Centre, the deployment of riot squads on picket lines, widespread use of road-blocks and the saturation policing of mining areas. What small degree of democratic accountability of the police that existed before the strike was considerably eroded as the dispute progressed. In addition, both criminal and civil law were used against strikers and their supporters on a scale without precedent this century. This book brings together a series of essays which analyse these developments and assess the threat they pose to both civil liberties and trade unionism in Britain. It also draws together the links between the policing of the strike and policing in other social areas: Northern Ireland, black communities and past industrial disputes. A final section examines the response which trade unionists and civil libertarians have made to the policing of the strike, and stresses the need
