Structuralism is an approach to understanding phenomena as systems of signs. According to Saussure, the relation between the signifying (the sound-image) and the signified (the concept) is arbitrary and defined by its differences from other signs within the system of language. The value of each sign results solely from the simultaneous presence of the others.
