The poem describes a cosmic battle between Jesus Christ and Satan that takes place in a vast cosmic coliseum. God oversees the battle between his Son and the lord of sin and death. Over many rounds, Satan is unable to touch Jesus or defeat him, despite throwing every trick and attack at him. In the final round, Satan strikes Jesus and he falls to the ground, seemingly defeated.
