The story is about two men, Sam and Bill, who kidnap the son of a wealthy man named Ebenezer Dorset in an attempt to collect a ransom. They take the boy, nicknamed "Red Chief", to a cave in the mountains. However, Red Chief thoroughly enjoys the adventure and refuses to cooperate. He continuously causes trouble and even attacks Bill. After failed attempts to control Red Chief, Sam and Bill decide to return the boy and ask Dorset for money to take him off their hands instead.
