Over a two-year period, MIT Lincoln Laboratory conducted two experiments to test spatial beam diversity, symbol encoding, and interleaving in reducing the effects of turbulence on optical communication links. The first experiment achieved a 2.7 Gb/s link over 5.4 km using four spatially separated apertures. A second experiment demonstrated an error-free 60 km air-to-ground link using similar equipment.
