Wilhelm Röntgen discovered x-rays in 1895. X-rays are high-energy electromagnetic waves that can pass through and image structures inside the body. An x-ray machine produces x-rays through thermionic emission, which releases electrons from a heated filament in the x-ray tube. These electrons are accelerated toward the anode target, producing x-rays upon impact. Exposure factors including kVp (peak voltage), mA (current), and exposure time determine the number and penetrating power of x-rays.
