What is Chronic Diseases and Risks about?
Chronic diseases are defined broadly as conditions lasting for 1 year or more, requiring ongoing medical treatment, limiting activities of daily living, or both. Chronic diseases are the primary reason for disability and mortality in Westernized countries such as the United States. The most common chronic diseases include cardiovascular, pulmonary, and musculoskeletal diseases, along with type 2 diabetes mellitus, dementia, and cancer. Chronic diseases are responsible for 7 out of every 10 deaths in the United States. Risky behaviors that result in chronic diseases include tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, poor nutrition with diets low in fruits and vegetables but high in sodium and saturated fats, lack of physical activity, and excessive alcohol use.
