This paper presents a method for identifying lithologies and depositional facies in wells using neural networks. The method can be applied to cored wells to identify facies, and then to nearby uncored wells to infer facies based on well log data. The neural network approach provides quantitative confidence measures for each facies identification and can incorporate geologic knowledge to guide the analysis.
