What is Understanding Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) about?
LEDs emit light when forward biased due to a phenomenon called electroluminescence. In materials like gallium phosphide or gallium arsenide phosphide, the number of photons emitted is sufficient to create a visible light source. When an LED is forward biased, electrons and holes move toward the junction and recombine, radiating the energy difference between conduction and valence bands as light.
