What is Muslims in the Christian World Order about?
The aim of this paper is to explore how medieval Christian authors of universal histories of the Carolingian epoch could combine their concept of God's plan of the history of salvation with the description of the Islamic expansion. The Carolingian period is especially interesting because the Muslims, since they had first set foot on occidental earth in 711, had established themselves as one of the great political powers in early medieval Europe during the era of the Carolingians. How -the Christians must have asked themselves -was this possible in a world in which the fate of mankind was controlled by divine providence and in which they were God's chosen people? The most important chronicles are those of Ado of Vienne and Regino of Prüm (while the chronicle of Freculphus of Lisieux already ends with the death of Gregory the Great before it could touch on the Muslims). This paper reveals that the Christian historiographers clearly established a place for Muslims in world history which was constructed from the existing knowledge they had of the Saracens and essentially shaped by their differing comprehension of the Islamic expansion.
