This study conducts a meta-analysis comparing the cost of transport (COT) for transtibial amputees using energy storage and return (ESR) prosthetic feet versus solid ankle cushioned heel (SACH) feet. The results show a statistically significant but small reduction in COT with ESR feet, which is 97.3% of that with SACH feet, indicating that the improvement is not functionally significant. The authors suggest further research is needed on prosthetic designs to enhance walking efficiency for amputees.
