The Times Record newspaper from Brunswick, Maine reported on September 7, 1976 that Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a Civil War general and later president of Bowdoin College, defended Little Round Top hill during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Chamberlain received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in leading the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment in successfully defending the Union left flank against repeated Confederate attacks.
