Ptolemy was an ancient Greek mathematician, astronomer, geographer and astrologer who lived in Alexandria, Egypt under Roman rule. He is most famous for his astronomical treatise the Almagest, which described the Ptolemaic system where the Earth is the center of the universe. Ptolemy made original contributions by presenting detailed mathematical models for the motions of each planet, which were not superseded until Copernicus introduced his heliocentric theory over a century later.
