What is Poppies: A Poem by Usman Awang about?

The poem describes how poppies grow from the blood and remains of fallen soldiers killed in war. It depicts the immense suffering war causes, leaving many wounded, orphaned, widowed or homeless. While the poppies bloom beautifully, they stand as a symbol of the horrors of war and the millions who lost their lives or livelihoods because of war and the "war maniacs" who start conflicts for profit with no regard for human life.
