What is Ferrous metals about?

Ferrous metals/Eisenme talle ## 81-1204 A Statistical Aspect of Stress Corrosion Cracking of a High-Strength Steel in NaCl Solution. Results from statistical experiments conducted using a Ni-Cr-Mo steel are presented. The specimens of steel which had a chemical composition, in wt.-% of carbon-0.4 1, Si-0.28. Mn-0.67. phosphorus0.02, sulfur-0.025, Ni-1.68. Cr-0.86. Mo-0.20, Cu-0.16, were dead weight loaded in bending using a cantilever-type stress corrosion cracking (SCC) testing machine and the zone around the notch was surrounded by 3.5% NaCl solution. From the total life, t (the time to final fracture) as plotted on Weibull probability paper, three reiions are indicated. A composite Weibull distribution may, however, be used to describe the entire region. The idea of decomposing the distribution of the total life into that of crack initiation life and crack propagation life and predicting the distribution of the total life in the region of extremely low failure probability is proposed as a means of studying statistical aspects of time-dependent fracture.-H.G.W.
