What is Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene about?
Adopted from Expanded PTFE Applications Handbook by S. Ebnesajjad, Elsevier, 2016. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a unique polymer with a linear structure and higher molecular weight than other thermoplastics. This chapter describes an introduction to the important aspects of Expanded PTFE (ePTFE) and describes examples of its applications. Expanded PTFE (ePTFE) is a porous membrane that shares many of PTFE's unique properties, introduces new ones as well as overcoming many of PTFE's shortcomings, including its lack of strength under stress (Fig. 8.1). ePTFE has, consequently, enabled literally thousands of new applications. These applications impact nearly every area of human life, from life-saving endovascular grafts to industrial filters to comfortable apparel and footwear.
