Although the Scandinavian languages have played an important role as researchobject in the development of generative grammar during the last twenty years,they have not been a prominent subject for studies of language acquisitionwithin this research paradigm. Swedish is no exception. There are a handful ofdetailed studies of the acquisition of particular parts of Swedish grammar,presented in papers e.g. by Ute Bohnacker, Gisela Håkansson, Gunlög Josefsson,Christer Platzack, and Lynn Santelmann, but there is so far no comprehensiveoverview of the results. In this volume we have assembled nine chaptersaddressing different aspects of the acquisition of Swedish, all of which arewritten exclusively for this volume. Most of the studies deal with the acquisitionof various parts of Swedish syntax, but there is also a chapter on the development of the semantics of tense. In addition to a presentation of the followingchapters this introductory chapter includes a short grammar of Swedish, wherethe most important differences with regard to English are highlighted.
