What is Natural History of Diabetic Retinopathy about?

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of blindness in adults aged 20-74. Nearly all patients with type 1 diabetes and over 60% of patients with type 2 diabetes develop retinopathy within the first two decades of the disease. A study found that 3.6% of younger patients with type 1 diabetes and 1.6% of older patients with type 2 diabetes were legally blind, with 86% and 33% of blindness respectively caused by diabetic retinopathy.
