Bringing this volume into existence was very much a cooperative activity. The co-editorship makes this obvious at one level, but there are many other levels of cooperation that are not so obvious. First, we must thank all the contributors for being willing to shape their contributions around the common theme of 'tradition,' which emerged only through a year of letter-writing and discussion, and for the effort they all put into reading and commenting on each other's pieces in order to lend the volume coherence. Second, we must single out for special thanks John Burbidge, who did a great deal to help us put the volume together and who kindly undertook to write the foreword on Harris.
