José Rizal was a Filipino polymath born in 1861 who was a key figure in advocating for reforms against discrimination under Spanish colonial rule. As a writer, doctor and nationalist, he published two novels highlighting issues with the Spanish colonial system and supported non-violent reform. Despite his peaceful advocacy, he was executed by firing squad in 1896 at age 35, becoming a martyr that further fueled the desire for Philippine independence from Spain.
