What is Overview of Newport-Class LSTs about?

The Newport-class tank landing ships were larger, faster LSTs intended to transport tanks and equipment for the US Navy. Twenty were built between 1966-1972, with plans for 27. They could carry 500 tons of vehicles, 431 troops and had a top speed of 22 knots. By the 1990s, their 3-inch guns had been removed and the ships were made obsolete by newer air-cushioned landing craft. Many were sold to foreign navies while the remaining 8 were decommissioned from the US fleet by 2002.
