This study examined the use of epidural clonidine instead of fentanyl for labor analgesia and postoperative pain management in 14 opioid-addicted pregnant women on buprenorphine maintenance therapy. All 7 women in labor achieved adequate analgesia with clonidine-bupivacaine epidurals, and 5 of 7 avoided supplemental opioids postpartum.
