The Hatas were a Syriac Christian tribe originally from Khotan in eastern Turkistan who settled in Japan around 1500 years ago, establishing the first Christian churches before the arrival of St. Francis Xavier in 1549. Although persecuted in China and Korea, they were granted freedom in Japan from their arrival until the days of Empress Suiko in the 7th century. Under Prince Regent Shotoku, they had a "Well of Israel" and a symbolic tripod representing the Trinity at their church grounds in Kyoto. Syriac C
