Two fluorescence bands of /I-N,N-dimcthylnmino-benzonitrilc (DAB, I) have previously been ascribed to two emittinp states, the strongly polar 'La and the less polar 'Lb, OT to the presence of an escimcr. However, the psr,iItl polx- ization of both emission bands in derivatives II and III, the effect of substituents, especially the steric effccr on the dimethylamino poup, and the lack of concenzation effects in 3 broad concentration range, invalidate these hypotheses. WC tentatively assio\_n the emissions to the existence of two excited species differing in polarity and in the oricnfatian of the -N(CH3)2 group: a lone pair perpendicular or paraiicl to the plane of benzene ring; in the htter case nJ ", orbit& of the -GN group seem to be involved in the exciration.
