What is Developments in short and medium span bridge engineering '90: Papers presented at the Third International Conference on Short and Medium Span Bridges held ... Toronto, Ontario, Canada, August 7-10, 1990 about?
The Veterans Administration (VA) bridge is a continuous three span pedestrian bridge providing an enclosed elevated corridor between two hospital buildings in Portland, Oregon. The total length of the bridge between the buildings is 198 m with a main span of 121.3 m. Support along the span is provided by two towers with four pairs of stay cables extending from each. This paper discusses wind loading and structural design aspects of the VA pedestrian bridge. Wind loading on this bridge was investigated at the laboratory of Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin (RWDI) Inc. by means of a wind tunnel study using a 1:200 scale aeroelastic model of the bridge and all significant surroundings within a radius of 250 m. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influences of the surrounding buildings and the complex topography on modifying wind flows around the structure which could produce unusual wind loading on and structural instabilities in the bridge. Wind tunnel tests were also conducted with the bridge isolated in smooth flow to study its behaviour in the absence of turbulence. The bridge model represented the flexural stiffness of the deck in both the vertical and horizontal directio
