Gibbons v. Ogden (1824) involved a dispute over whether New York could grant a monopoly to operate steamboats in interstate waters between New York and New Jersey. Aaron Ogden held a license from New York to operate steamboats under this monopoly. However, Thomas Gibbons operated competing steamboats under a federal coasting license.
