A revision of the 10-volume <I>Dictionary of World Biography</I> series, published 1987-95, it contains new entries to broaden coverage, updated bibliographies, succession tables, a new page design, and a section containing maps of various parts of the ancient world. The 325 entries, 260 carried over from the previous series, discuss people whose life's work or major accomplishments occurred from the earliest written records to the fall of Rome and the dawn of the Middle Ages. They range from about three to about six pages each. The arrangement is alphabetical, with indexes by chronology, category (for example, government, music, religion), geography, person, and subject.
