A Hindu undivided family (HUF) is assessed as a separate entity for income tax purposes. An HUF consists of male lineage descendants of a common ancestor, their wives and unmarried daughters. It must have common family property and at least two members. Daughters now have the same rights as sons to coparcenary property according to recent amendments. The senior most male member is usually the Karta, who manages the HUF. Certain types of individual income are not included in the HUF
