Sudoite, muscovite, and quartz are authigenic minerals of the Cornberger Sandstein, the youngest eolian member of the uppermost Lower Permian. The sudoite is to a great extent similar to the material from the Kesselberg area (Black Forest, Germany). Sudoite appears in colourless flakes up to some microns in diameter having low refractive indices and a very low birefringenee. Probably, 2V x is also very low. Sudoite and 1 M-muscovite form aggregates of sand size but also fill pore spaces of the sandstone. X-ray and chemical investigations confirm that a dioctahedral tetraphormic phyllosilicate with a0=5.16A, b0=8,94A, d00~:14.14A exists in which AI is by large predominant in the oetahedral sheets. The 003-peak is the strongest basal reflection. The thermal behaviour of sudoite is similar to that of Mg-rich chlorites: between 400~50~ the intensity of the 001-reflection has increased more than twice. All other basal reflections have lost part of their intensity. At higher temperatures, all basal reflections ar e weakened; at 800~ the sudoite structure has disappeared. d(001 ) decreases with increasing temperature.
