Symplostatin 2, a new cyclic depsipeptide analogue of dolastatin 13, has been isolated from the marine cyanobacterium Symploca hydnoides collected near Guam. The structure was elucidated using extensive 2-D NMR techniques, revealing the presence of both R- and S-forms of a methionine sulfoxide residue. This discovery supports the hypothesis that many compounds originally isolated from the sea hare Dolabella auricularia are likely of cyanobacterial origin.
