Subtitles have evolved from intertitles inserted between scenes to being placed directly in the film image. Early techniques involved manually projecting slides or photographing printed subtitles onto film frames. Later, subtitles were stamped onto film using heated printing plates or a chemical process applying wax or paraffin.
